StudioTrack Review

Beautifully Presented Multi-Track Recorder

For work and freelance I normally work on Pro-Tools which is the audio standard in recording and mixing.  Back in the day I had a $50 pawn shop Tascam cassette 4 track recorder.  I don’t think I could ever go back to cassettes, although they were fun, the Tascam took up alot of space.  Imagine the beauty of Pro-Tools and the functionality/portability of a four track recorder(not just prohibited to 4 tracks though), stuff it in your iPad, pepper in a bunch of incredible options/features/effects, and StudioTrack is your new multitrack recording friend.   Now you may twinge at the price and you’re used to paying under $4.99 for all your great apps, but think about this: $39.99 is as much as a book on how to record music digitally, and I’m sure you’ve also had worse dining out experiences for more than that $.  So stay in, make your own food, and put your money towards expanding your creative music capabilities and using your iPad for more than just reading Winnie the Pooh.  Still can’t justify the price, look at what’s under the hood:

  • Multitrack Recording – 8 tracks plus bounce
  • Re-arrangeable tracks with FX Bypass, Reverb Send, Pan, Gain, Mute, Solo, Record Arm and Track Icon
  • TrackFX – Tempo-synced Delay, Compressor, Parametric EQ and Reverb Send on every track
  • Calibrated Meters – accurately monitor record and playback levels
  • Calibrated Faders – accurately adjust playback level of each track
  • MasterFX – sweeten the sound of your recordings with a compressor-limiter and a 4-band parametric EQ
  • Output Compressor-Limiter – automatically fattens sound of the output mix
  • Master Channel with Reverb Return and Stereo Output meters
  • Metronome – select tempo by number or tapping. Includes pro drum recordings.
  • Bounce – mix song to track 1 and 2 of a new song to record as many tracks as you want
  • Mix – Save the mix as a stereo file
  • AudioPaste – allows pasting audio from AudioCopy compatible apps like InstantDrummer and DopplerPad
  • WiFi sync mix or individual tracks to a computer and import into any software that imports WAV files
  • Slide-to-Record – prevents over-writing your tracks
  • Latency Compensation – accurate to within 1ms
  • Recording Quality – 16 bit, 44.1 kHz
  • Supports both portrait and landscape iPad views
  • You still can’t find a pawn shop multitrack recorder that does all this for under $40.  This is quite nice.  I’ve fooled around with it a bit, but was short on content to bring in to work on, so I recorded a multitrack a-capella opus complete with whistle harmonies.  Quite a fun chore it was.  I may be finishing up the whistle chorus album sometime soon, so watch out.  You also can’t even pay for good compression effects for under $40 anywhere.

One thing that really struck me is the way this thing looks, every knob and tweakable slider, etc. is beautifully arranged and designed, looking so perfectly 3d that you really want to feel the knobs twist under your fingers, instead you’re left with more excuses to get plenty of fingerprints and smears on your ipad screen.  Keep a microfiber cloth nearby if you plan on recording an album.  The folks at Sonoma Wire Works have a good thing going, that I’m sure will just keep getting better with each update.  It seems to me that if you pay $39.99 for an app you’re going to get some good stuff in the future, that’s my confident hope moving forward.  Welcome to the new world of multitracking.

    4. Should I get the iPad if I own the iPhone?

    5. ipadcritic says:

Yes, it’s a different experience totally. After 3 minutes with the iPad I realized it’s not really an oversized iPhone like people said. Different world. Actually it may make you dislike your iPhone apps a touch because the experience is so much greater on the iPad in my opinion.
